Israeli Security Firms Work to Combat Car Hacking

NEWS DESK | Imagine driving down the highway when suddenly someone else is in control of your car. It's a hacking reality that is turning automakers into software companies. What exactly can the hackers do, and what are Israeli companies are doing to stop them? Our Ariel Levin-Waldman has the story.

Story:
Every modern car zooming by on the highway is vulnerable to cyber attack.

At a moment's notice, your steering can lock up, the brakes can go unresponsive and every dashboard display can become meaningless.

This is the sort of power a hacker has today.

It is creating a major market for automotive cyber security — a field projected to be worth six billion dollars by 2025.

The threat of hacking already has real world consequences. U.S. courts have already ruled against Chrysler for holes in their systems exploited by hackers in 2015.

'What typically happens is you do some kind of exploit and get code running on one of these computers,' Jeep hacker Charlie Miller says.

'You're not remotely hacking the brakes or acceleration, you are hacking the computer that speaks to those things.' says Jeep hacker Chris Valasek.

Each of those systems is designed for safety; but every computer is a back door for hackers.

'The infotainment has the most connectivity and therefore attack surfaces — it has Bluetooth, it has Wifi, and sometimes even a GSM sim card and USB socket,' Head of marketing at CYMOTIVE Shay Horowitz explains.

'As a vehicle becomes more connected it opens up more vulnerabilities and then there are hackers that take advantage of that in order to attack the target,' says Daniel Barzilai, executive chairman at Karamba Security.

Once a hack is done, it can be replicated across entire fleets of cars — or even sold online as and app, and suddenly anyone can use it.

'It’s a simple Android app that can be deployed by everyone and downloaded over a play store. It takes zero skills to use. You just press a button and it opens the car,' explains Barak Caspi, cyber security researcher and hacker at CYMOTIVE.

This has authorities around the world worried about just who wants this power.

'Who would take advantage of that? The assistant attorney general in the US said their main concern was terrorists and organized crime,' Barzilai says.

'The risk is out there. We don't need to wait for autonomous cars. Any interconnected vehicle is hackable, and we have tens of millions of those on the road today,' Chief marketing officer of ARGUS Yoni Heilbronn says.

In Israel, private security firms are already working on their own solutions.

Some are trying to create counter measures, while others to prevent hacking intrusions. Some more are finding out just where the vulnerabilities even are
It's a new field — cyber security for your vehicle, and Israeli firms are trying to come up with the software and solutions to tomorrow's problems.
