Kelsey is bi-racial - she began her academic inquiry wondering "why" people needed to know her origins - and through that examination she came to understand that "why" was just the beginning. She comes to the TEDx stage to share the "shared experiences" of bi-racial individuals and why those who aren't should understand them.

interesting thought. sometimes i get frustrated when people i’ve just met talk about their ethnicity in front of me and don’t try to include me, because i look white since my skin is pale. i’m half filipino and half english. i get frustrated why people assume that i’m too white to understand.

Thank you for this, being multiracial, this journey has been very hard. This video has brought me so much peace and valuable information.

Interesting discussion. Im mixed race and I’ve travelled the globe. My experience is unique when I travel because my ethnically ambiguous looks causes many non-white foreigners to assume I am related or associated with their own cultures and ethnicity. I love those intimate interactions when they happen. It’s like I momentarily get to experience what it’s actually like to be a part of that culture. I also witness that many times they have a hard time accepting the truth of my background once I clarify, because they have already categorized me as one of them. I would love to see more research about this phenomenon.

Filipina, Rucyn, White. Its hard being gatekept traditions from family or not bring wanted in other cultures because I'm too other culture. It's annoying being too White to be Filipina. Too Rucyn to be Filipina. Too Filipina to be Rucyn. Too White to be Rucyn. Too Filipina to be White and to Rucyn to be White.

Thank you for saying a white woman of Mexican descent. Too many people say Mexican as if it's new race that just popped out of the ground.

First thing there’s no such thing as race. Races was a construct developed by Europeans to divide and conquer.

There’s different ethnicities, but only one human race. Acts 17:26
