I have an ipad pro 10.5 with an apple pencil for 3 years, and used it almost daily, without screen protector and I can attest it does NOT have any scratch. Now I am doing the same with my 2020 12.9 inch ipad pro.

I can assure you that apple pencil will not scratch the ipad screen, because softer material does not leave a mark on harder material, no matter how many times you rub the pencil against the screen. If there are scratches on your ipad screen, they come from elsewhere. You need to buy a cover, but screen protecters are useless except they reflect more sunlight into your eyes.

I have been putting screen protectors on my iPads ever since they came out and I have bought every one. But now that I have the latest 12.9” iPad Pro I have decided not to. The main reason? They detract terribly from the original screen, particularly screen glare. The new iPad Air 4 and Pros, 11” and 12.9 have great anti-reflective coatings. And they really work. I can sit by a window and have very little reflection on my iPad but with a screen protector, film or glass, the reflections ruin the image, take away the true black screen (12.9”) and spoil this expensive device. Furthermore all glass screen protectors spoil drawings. You cannot draw a line without jitter. Film screen protectors let you draw fine and generally have good resistance but the native glass now on the pros are fine for drawing, there is some pen resistance that you need. A glass protector is too slippery. Further the glass on the iPad has improved so the possibility of scratches has been minimised. Film screen protectors always scratch but with the iPad on you can’t see them. So for the first time in 10 years, no screen protector (yet) and I am enjoying the screen experience so much more. I bet you no one at Apple puts a screen protector on their iPads.

I agree, every device like a phone or tablet needs a screen protector. We spend all of this money on our tech we need to protect and make it last as long as possible. Good video for those who don’t think they need one

A lot of the reviews for the screen protectors say the touch function gets lowered and some of the protectors mess up your Apple Pencil. 😭

I'm debating whether to get a tempered glass or paperlike screen protector. I will be drawing on the ipad alot but also but don't want to have the slightly reduced screen quality of the paperlike protectors. Also heard Paperlike protectors wear out your Apple pencil tips quicker.


Also does tempered glass protector detract form the laminated screen at all?

Of course you can get scatches, but I rather look at a scratch then a bad screen. I use a iPad mini 5 and I do not use a screen protector. I have no marks after using it over a year now. I love the clear view on it. I was able to compare some iPads of friends with iPad air and pro with screen protectors on it. When I was using them, I felt like having some bad sunglasses with the typical foggy sight in it. They also compared and decided to take the protector off. They were amazed how nice the their screen is now. Also much better in the sun.

a screen protector is always needed to prevent scratches, but on the ipad pro it's even more important to get one imo because the glass thickness of the screen is so thin, when you use the apple pencil you can see how soft the glass is, and i really don't like to see that

Simple logic. Softer materials do not stratch harder surfaces. This is the reason why only a diamond can scratch another diamond. The apple pencil wont scratch the ipad. If you have a case covering the screen most of the time, then I see no reason why you'll do any worse than someone with a screen protector.

You dont need screen protector. My old ipad pro still dont have any scratch and cracks even fall off many times. Until the ipad is dead because of it but the screen still clean as new
