Furnaces do give you more XP though. Smokers and blast furnaces give half the amount of XP. So you are choosing to sacrifice XP for a quicker smelting/cooking time.

Campfires are also a good alternative to furnaces if you don’t have stone yet. They cook 4 food in 30 seconds total compared to 1 in 10 seconds. Or… use a smoker for 4 in 20 seconds…

I know there are alternative ways to get iron ingots, but you're probably going to use a furnace to smelt raw iron in order to make the blast furnace anyways
