I love that you mentioned the cringy Diasporas savior complex! When I first lived in Durban I came with it. I was going to “help people.” But realized I was the one that needed the helping! I needed to slow down and listen! Ask questions, and listen! Take my time! Learn how to greet people properly and show respect before I did ANYTHING! I learned I had adopted some colonizing ways and I needed to drop them desperately! 5 years later and I’m still learning! But my continental brothers and sisters have been incredibly patient with me! I TRULY love SA! And recognized I needed to start healing before I “help” anybody.

What the world needs to understand is, no matter what country you go to in the world don’t try to change their culture. If this is your plan don’t go there to live stay in your own country. This is one of many reasons the world is messed up. “When you go to Rome, do as the Romans do”

Any new environment strips away who you thought you were and leaves you with who you really are.

I always love to hear your advice. This is the truth!!! My family will be relocating to the continent in 2024 and being still and learning is my goal for the year.

Hi Ashley, I find these days navigating a space where we have a lot of internationals gracing our shores, me personally I am so sorry to say but Americans are some of my least favourite people to deal with due to their perceived arrogance. As you mentioned to your viewers that they need to try and understand the space they are entering. We are perfectly happy the way we are. We take great pride in who we are as a people.
When people visit they need to respect our ways and if they are not happy with the way things are they then need to leave.
We are very welcoming as a people and we love to share but I believe that in time to come resentment will build up towards outsiders as they purchase the best of what our land has to offer which of course is no fault of the outsider but there should be some sort of regulation as to how much/or how many outsiders may purchase or set up businesses in our country.
I am speaking as a South African. Also South Africa is one of the most Westernised/Cosmopolitan countries on the continent and everyone is inviting each other here to operate their businesses. How much is too much. The locals I think are straining at the seams and I personally think this is an implosion waiting to happen.
Always appreciate your views, thought I’d share my views here too.

I have to say that everything you said here is absolutely correct in the way that most Americans don't factor in that they are in a different country and they are used to how things are done in America. I am glad that you were able to notice this trend of the AA community failing in Africa and hopefully this will be able to change their, mindset.

Lovely balanced and nuanced video, I wish it was longer. There is so much more to unpack in this video. It is people like you who strengthen Black unity internationally. Keep doing what you are doing.✊

Great video. Keep up this type of dialogue. When I get there in Durban full time next year, I will reach out. Moving from Atlanta born and educated in Washington, DC. It was a 5 year journey to transitioning with over a dozen visits, massive research, increasing the length of stay and outside the tourist places, finding and building relationships with South Africans, ie my lady is South African and understand about how the money works.

As a black American I personally never entertain moving to Africa because I’m realistic about the fact that my African ancestor lived in Africa hundreds of years ago. I truly feel it’s wonderful that there are Black Americans who do want to move to Africa
they just need to remember that despite their history with the country they are visitors to a new country that they basically no nothing about and just like any other country they would move to be respectful of that country culture and build their lives around that not come in and think they can change it to their liking. I just know myself well enough that I wouldn’t want to make those changes.

I think there is a lot of dishonesty in these conversations about how AAs come to Africa. African countries as you guys said are very different from the West but AAs are not backed by America when coming to Africa. Nor are there government ran programs that are in charge of finding housing, host-families and even welfare programs for African Americans coming to Africa. It less to do with black Americans bad attitude or lack of research there is no real AA diaspora to really cushion their transition. We really need to stop this narrative that African Americans are "Innate Devils" trying to ruin every other black countries lives. Africans even in Africa complain about how businesses are rain in Africa just as black Americans complain about black businesses in America. Many Africans come to the states and also don't understand the complexity of racism and how it has gravely impacted African Americans economic mobility. And telling someone to simply study hard with the resources to thrive are futile.

I teach international business at university, I would like to collaborate on this area.

It is sad to see a lot of AA comming and returning to the US, as result of lack understanding how things work in South Africa.

South Africa is one of the few countries in the world, that offers you a second chance in life, on the basis that you have relevant skills set, right attitude, right network, prepared to work hard and patience.

Chinese, Indians and others come here and succeed.

First economic integration in the continent through entrepreneurship and investments . Helps establish network, trust and economic stability . Then socio-cultural integration through language, marriage, community engagement etc and other social activities like volunteering . Then least geo-political engagements .

One thing that heal the divide is this....people with different cultural backgrounds communicate using different styles. Their language, words, gestures, and phrases may differ even in their application, this is first point of entry. Understand people's culture and respect it. Many video on social media show South Africa as a super friendly country but it all depends. When you have to do business in certain places in South Africa you serioulsy need to change your mind set and appreciate the culture of the people....thanks Ashely for your video
