Converting a number to scientific notation

👉 Learn how to convert numbers to scientific notations. Scientific notation is a convenient way of writing very large or very small numbers. A number written in scientific notation is of the form a * 10^n where a is the first non-zero number between 1 and 10, (1 included) and n is the number of digits upto the decimal point.

To convert a very small number to scientific notation (numbers with zeros before the first non-zero digit), we move the decimal point from its original position to the position immediately after the first non-zero digit and count the number of digits from the original position of the decimal point to the final position as the value of n.

To convert a very big number, we place the decimal point immediately after the first digit and count the remainder of the digits (up to the decimal point if there is one) as the value of n.
