So many people misunderstand these scene. He is not using the paper analogy to explain how a worm hole works, like they did in Event Horizon. He is saying “all those paper analogies that we are all familiar with, are a 2D representation. When we turn the 2D holes poked into the paper back into 3D we get a sphere.” The whole point of the scene is to explain why the entry is a sphere, not to explain how a wormhole works.

This whole sequence, while accurate, took me out of the movie for that Moment because it was almost identical to the explanaition in Event Horizon

Couldn't it have been a naturally accuring worm hole?
