I was a student on London in the 80s. Next to Lambeth North tube station was a low rise 1960s office block. The type you could see anywhere. This was where MI6 was based. It blended in and was secret. So secret, in fact, that bus conductors would call out the stop as “spooks corner” as they pulled into the bus stop.

MI6 (Military Intelligence, department 6) was a WW1 title, as was MI5. Since the 1920s MI6 has been the SIS (Secret Intelligence Service) and MI5 has been the Security Service - but we just love the WW1 terms!
