Legend has it that Morphy could beat me with just a pawn.

Charles le Carpentier was actually Paul Morphy's uncle and a strong player (for an amateur) and in this game Paul was just 12 years old.

According to Nakamura, Morphy was approximately 400 points ahead of the very strongest players of his time. Conservative estimates put him in the 2400 to 2500 range. An astonishing attainment, particularly when you consider that the great bulk of his chess was played in casual settings against weak amateurs. So the traditional idea of a player beginning with nothing, and only slowly working their way up by study and regular exposure to stronger players doesn't apply to a true genius like Morphy. It is as though his brain was already pre-wired for excellence, in much the same way that all precocious talent apparently is ( Mozart being a popular example ). There is simply no other way to explain this phenomenon using the conventional learning model.
