NASA's latest mission is heading to the Trojan asteroids to help us answer some of the biggest questions about the origin of our solar system.

As of August 2020, NASA officially approved the construction of its asteroid hunting spacecraft named Lucy.

Lucy will be the first space mission in history to be launched to so many different destinations in independent orbits around our sun. The spacecraft will complete a 12-year journey visiting eight different asteroids in two large asteroid clouds near Jupiter known as the Trojan asteroids.

Although Lucy won’t be landing on any of the asteroids, the spacecraft will be mapping their surface geology, color, composition, densities, and it will even be keeping a look out for surprising mini satellites or rings that the asteroids could be pulling in.

Using an extensive suite of advanced instruments, Lucy will revolutionize our knowledge of planetary origins and the formation of the solar system.

Find out more about asteroid hunting Lucy in this Countdown to Launch.

The path Lucy is going to take is by far the most audacious ever attempted by any spacecraft. It shows how reliable the design and construction has become. Barely 20 years ago, meeting 1 celestial body was almost impossible. Let alone 8 in one shot. Incredible.

Imagine what we'll find when we start mining astroids. All those precious metals just waiting to be picked up.

Will Lucy's instruments be able to detect mineral deposits such as gold, platinum, and other precious metals? If so, i expect funding for future missions wont be an issue!

Bless you Maren for "sweet suite of instruments" 😁 Can't wait to discover new things from those asteroids. It's exciting that it has so many stops planned.

Lucy may have gotten it's name from Lucy, but Lucy got it's name from a song that was popular at the time. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

4:28 Lucy took its name from fossil Lucy, which took her name from the Beatles' song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, which is a backronym from LSD, the psychedelic drug...
