Diversity Visa Lottery FAQs

As a way to increase the diversity of immigrants arriving in the United States, the Department of States established the Diversity Visa Program. Each year, the program allows 50,000 randomly selected people, chosen from countries that don’t send many immigrants to the U.S., to obtain permanent residency or green cards.
