More Details:

Napoleon’s French Empire began in 1804 when he crowned himself emperor and ended in 1814, yet in a short time, it radically changed the political balance of Europe. Seizing the chaos that followed the French Revolution, Napoleon consolidated his military and political power, leading a series of successful campaigns that allowed him to dominate much of Europe. While presenting himself as a protector of revolutionary ideals, he centralized authority and established a strong, autocratic rule. The Napoleonic Code introduced modern legal reforms, accelerating the decline of feudalism and leaving a lasting impact on legal systems worldwide. However, his relentless wars, particularly the disastrous Russian campaign and the fierce Spanish guerrilla resistance, hastened the empire’s downfall. In 1814, he was defeated by the Sixth Coalition and exiled to Elba, but he escaped in 1815 and briefly regained power. This short-lived return, known as the Hundred Days, ended with a crushing defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, leading to his final exile on the remote island of Saint Helena, where he spent the rest of his life. Despite its brief existence, his empire strengthened nationalist movements across Europe and contributed to the development of modern state systems.
