I live in Berkeley about a half mile away from the tracks and the horns used to bother me until I learned that they are using a signaling system something like Morse code of short and long blasts ( backing up, pulling forward, approaching station, ect.) and now I actually find myself having fun listening and identifying the message. I wouldn’t want to be any closer though. I guess I’m easily amused.

And poor people still have roar of trains & horns.

@markmiller1352: In Chicago it's a daily routine for trains especially freight trains to blow their horns anytime day and night and people living by the tracks are somehow use to the noise and don't seem to mind. On one CTA RAPID TRANSIT LINE THE BROWN LINE people complain about hearing the crossing gate bells late at night. The CTA turns off the bells after 11PM through 5:30 AM. This L Line has about 10 street grade crossings and it's 3rd rail running dangerous! The 3rd rail is not in the streets though but on each side of the streets.

I hope Union Pacific has figured out another way to alert drivers at the rail crossings during those hours.

waiting for someone to get injured then the residents will complain again

What does the sign look do?
People are looking at their phones instead of watching the railroad crossings before crossing and a quiet train quietly hits them.

soooo you literally build a house next to a train crossing and then complain that a train does train things? I'm going to buy a house next to an airport's busy runway and demand between 10pm and 7am that no flights take of and

Next people will be complaining about airplanes making too much noise around the airports. If you don’t want to hear train horns then don’t live near the tracks and if you don’t want to hear airplanes then don’t live near the airport. Can’t wait for one of the people that’s whining about train horns getting creamed by a train. That would be hilarious.

What's sure to happen is that one of these yahoo's will drive in front of a train and get hit because they didn't hear it. Then their heirs will sue the city. And win. If you don't want to hear trains, don't buy a place near the tracks.

People are stupid. Moving next to a train crossing and demanding silence.
