Thank you! You answered many of my questions about US mainline steam trips - especially about the frequency of diesels in the consists...

I remember The American Freedom train was on this VHS tape I had when I was little called "I Love Toy Trains". Ah the memories

It is heartening to hear your remarks about mainline companies running "...near to capacity...". At one time it was speculated that the age of the railway was over. Not any more, it would seem.

UP 844 has never been retired. They really didn't need to work on 844 much. New coat of paint with some tweaking here and there and it was done.

I saw the 4449 daylight in Milwaukee and I got to go in the cab and I was about 4 or 5 years old and we watched it go by but a csx totally went in front of it and I was excited to see csx for the first time I was to young to appreciate it...

In a technical sense the first steam mainline excursions by preservationist was with 2 CP G5s. The first large engine to run these main line excursions was NKP 759 plus it ran the golden spike centennial.

1:37 What locomotive is that? I saw it in a documentary once about steam giants, but I can't remember what they were called. They headed up iron ore drags out of Minnesota; that's all I remember.

Really enjoying your Train Talk series. Would like to learn the anatomy of a Diesel-electric locomotive. How do train breaks work? How do Radio controlled locomotives work? Are there Do's and Don'ts of train watching?

You just answered one of my long time questions of ... why do steam excursion trains add on a modern diesel unit? ...steam locomotives pulled trains for years without helper locomotives ... and now I know the answer ... thank you for that Mike

I love steam locomotives as well, Mike. Would you like to see a QJ on the Iowa Interstate Railway?

I cannot wait for the 844 to be under steam again. I recall she was used for the credits of the show shining time station, showing her as Union Pacific 8444. She was returned to 844 by the time shining time station first aired. And of course, she is after all, never retired.

its sad that over 70% of the countrywide steam locomotives only lasted until the 1950s... may their legacy still live on for they are still alive!
