Commons speaker 'regrets' decision to allow Labour vote on Gaza ceasefire

Lindsay Hoyle earlier allowed Keir Starmer to hold a vote on Labour's preferred solution to the Middle East crisis. Dozens of Labour MPs were initially preparing to vote for a SNP motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. However, Hoyle decided to allow Labour to hold a vote on its own amendment, calling for a ceasefire only in certain circumstances. After chaos ensued and MPs walked out in protest, the speaker addressed MPs and apologised for his earlier decision, saying he 'regretted' how the debate had turned out. The SNP leader, Stephen Flynn, said the speaker's position was now 'intolerable'.

Liar or a coward. Doesn't matter how you look at it he shouldn't be in the position he's in.

Not shown the house at its best. Meaning, shown the speaker at his worst.

Looks like certain members of the house (and parties) are treated more fairly than others.

He’ll get his peerage, that’s all he is interested in. The way he ran away and left his deputy to take the flak for his decision should shame him. But it won’t.

His position is now untenable and he should resign.

Why would MPs and their families need protecting and from whom?

Rhetorical.

By far the weakest Speaker in living memory. He has shown himself incapable of doing the job and should resign immediately.

No, he didn't regret his decision to allow a vote on the Labour amendment...What he regretted was how it ended up - he regretted the chaotic outcome, not the fact that the Labour amendment was included in the debate..."I've got to say Iregret how it's ended up..."

Regretfully, regretting decisions is becoming somewhat of a British pastime.
