Let's analysis the process of stakeholder analysis in this PMI PMP project management tutorial video.
- Stakeholder analysis is a technique of systematically gathering and analyzing quantitative and qualitative information to determine whose interests should be taken into account throughout the project.
- Stakeholder analysis grid identifies the interests, expectations, and influence of the stakeholders and relates them to the purpose of the project.
Here are some classification models that helps to better organize and manage the stakeholders.
- Power/interest grid:
grouping the stakeholders based on their level of authority (""power"") and their level or concern (""interest"") regarding the project outcomes
- Power/influence grid:
grouping the stakeholders based on their level of authority (""power"") and their active involvement (""influence"") in the project
- Influence/impact grid:
grouping the stakeholders based on their active involvement (""influence"") in the project and their ability to effect changes to the project’s planning or execution (""impact"")
- Salience model:
describing classes of stakeholders based on their power (ability to impose their will) ,urgency (need for immediate attention), and legitimacy (their involvement is appropriate).

The most inappropriate stakeholders are the ones who power is high and involvement/interested is illegitimate according to the salience model. It's kind of like someone coming on stage and stealing the spotlight when it is your turn to perform. Also, if you are keeping high power, low interest stakeholders just informed and they are being fussy that they are not been given more attention, as a pm, you are still in the green. However, in real life, you will have to go out of your way to influence them why they are not being kept satisfied. Some reasons could be that it frees up their time to focus on other high-priority projects. When there is a project constraint, it is also fine to weigh the votes or feedback of high power and high interest stakeholders over others - almost like weighted criteria.
