Maxpedition Rat Wallet

This is my first not-so-positive review on a Maxpedition item. Maxpedition advertises this piece of gear as a wallet. In my opinion it is far from being a wallet in the narrower sense of the word. It is some kind of multi purpose belt bag. I still have to find a proper use for it.

Hi Stefan, I have had a Rat Wallet for quite some time. I used to carry 2 separate smart phones and this was an excellent carrier for that purpose. I also used the front zipper compartment for my bus pass since it was easy to access and was being used several times daily. At first I had this attached to the strap of my Sitka, and then on the strap of my Kodiak. But now I am using a Falcon II and it lives on the shoulder strap there now. At this point It houses my Ipod and all the accessories (earphones, docking port, etc) as well as some items that i wish to have instant access to quickly. As you mentioned, it is not really a wallet. But there are lots of unintended uses for this item. I love all of the Maxpedition videos that you have posted, even the ones where you weren't too happy with the end result. Your reviews have helped me purchase several Maxpedition items because of the way you do a thorough review on each one. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the great review. I was looking into getting one of these for a wallet, but after seeing your review I have changed my mind. Thank you.

I have mine on the Molle webbing on the right side strap base of my Kodiak gearslinger. When traveling, I keep my digital camera in the front, my Iphone and my Ipod in the main dividers, and use the zip pocket for coinage to stop my shorts getting weighed down ( and save adjusting my belt all the time as a result). It's under my right arm when slung, and thus not in a pickpocket target location, and easily to hand. I agree, it's not a wallet as such.

Hi Stefan. I couldn't agree more. This is not what most would consider a wallet. I carry the Maxpedition C&M wallet for a few years now and I love it. The Rat would be well suited to carry a phone and battery charger as well as some basic first aid gear and perhaps a small swiss knife such as the
Victorinox Bantam. Remaining pockets could be used for fire starting equipment or something simular.

Good review - since I own a Rat Wallet, I can tell you that I use it as "pouch", mostly when I do vacation walk-arounds... and that seems to be what it was designed for - a small carry-all for small "packrat"-type stuff

Very good review! Great that you concentrated the review around the things that you really should use a wallet for if it is marketed as a wallet.

Thanks for the review Stefan, you have just saved me some money as I was going to buy one and use as a wallet. I think I will continue to use and enjoy my Maxpedition Spartan wallet as you do. One thing is for certain, this isn't a wallet or even a ladies purse.
Again thank you :)

Very frustrating that Maxpedition doesn't make a sleek clamshell pouch with a belt clip for EDC. Everything is bulky and over-engineered for hikers and stormtroopers.

I agree with your review. I bought this wallet (which wasn't cheap) with the idea of wearing it on my belt. The wallet is too thick even when empty. I've never been able to use it.

I agree that it is not good as a wallet. I put a guitar tuner and metronome in the back divided compartments, and business cards in the front buckle pouch. A few coins usually go in the zippered compartment. For this it works great, and attached to the side waist-level part of the shoulder strap of my Monsoon, it gives that bag some much-needed smaller item organization at my hip.

Great review. Unlike most Maxpedition fans, you maintained your integrity! One problem with the Spartan is that the bill area isn't large enough for US money. It needs to be a little longer to facilitate moving the bills in and out of the Spartan. And the shout out to Katabunga was tops! THANKS!! :o)

Good review.

I agree 100%. For me the minimum standard for a wallet should be plastic card organization.

I have been using my Anemone pouch to put money in sometimes and have also had the same problem with coins migrating between partitions. Very annoying.

You should do a review on the Maxpedition Spartan Wallet. Since you haven't yet.

Did the Spartan become the Minimalist? Looks the same but it has been a decade. Oh it is the #229 but Amazon just listing it dumb. Says Spartan in the details.
