We visited the St. Nicolas Elegant Residence in Chlorakas near Paphos, which has been occupied by migrants for over a year now - though in fact the situation seems to have changed in the days since we visited.

The Cyprus Mail is the only English-language daily newspaper published in Cyprus. It was established in 1945 and today, with its popular and widely-read website, the Cyprus Mail is among the most trusted news sites in Cyprus. The newspaper is not affiliated with any political parties and has always striven to maintain its independence. Over the past 70-plus years, the Cyprus Mail, with a small dedicated team, has covered momentous events in Cyprus’ modern history, chronicling the last gasps of British colonial rule, Cyprus’ truncated independence, the coup and Turkish invasion, and the decades of negotiations to stitch the divided island back together, plus a myriad of scandals, murders, and human interests stories that capture the island and its -people. Observers describe it as politically conservative.

There are large green/blue/brown bins on the streets, there really is no need to simply dump everything in the courtyard. If they respected their chosen home, they would at least keep it clean and tidy, instead they've turned it into a bombsite!

What dobypu expect 8%of the population is asylum seekers ' illegal immigrants ' this is very sad for you but how can you expect Cypriots who earn avarage 1200 euro a month, cant afford rent and food to pay for you aswell. If you were at 1% asylum seekers as it was agreed then we wpuldnt have this problem. Instead you have people from countries that has no war and you are economic migrants., i am sorry but Africa and Arabs has nearly 3 billion population, 2billion are below the poverty line... we should take 2 billion? How will we pay for you all? Where will you all live? You must fix the problems in your own countries and fight for your rights

these are awful living conditions, why dont they clear up the rubbish at least?
The goverment needs to do something with these people if they are there illegally and or sort out their asylum claims.

A lot of these apartments were sold to foreigners as investments, they were used by the owners for holidays and also let out as hotel apartments.

Due to the financial crisis some people paid over 120000 euros for these apartments to be built.

I have no idea how privately owned apartments were allocated to asylum seekers without consultation but Alpha Panareti had a lot to do with it I guess.

My parents had one of these in the upper area and were never asked if their apartment could be used, and now it is destroyed.

God knows how many peoples life savings and investments have been reduced to zero by this mess.

It's a horrible situation for all involved

This place was not called st Nicholas ellegant residents for nothing, it must of been more than decent before these people started to live there. They destroyed the place and everything around it. It looks like a rubbish dump. For them not to have electricity and water it must be because of their own doings.
Cyprus is struggling as it is and this lady is complaining that the country hasn't been offering her a job etc. All you could hear is just negativity and it comes from someone that left her own country and went to another. These people should be humble and grateful of what is offered to them. By the way, we didn't ask you to come to Cyprus, the doors are open to you, no one has forced you to stay!
