Malcolm was scared shitless. Tremendous acting by Denzel. Archie later said that he wasn't going to kill Malcolm; Archie did this to protect his rep. In Alex Hailey's book, Malcolm stated that in another life Archie could have done great things. He had the intellect to maybe be a mathematician. He was that smart.
