Bucket Test For Pool Leaks Detection

Do you have a leak in your pool? Wondering if water loss in your pool is the result of a leak or evaporation? The bucket test is an easy way to rule out pool leaks.

Steps to Perform the Bucket Test:-

· Bring pool water to a normal level.

· Fill the bucket with pool water to about one inch from the top.

· Place bucket on the first or second step of the pool.

· Mark the water level inside the bucket and the water level outside the bucket.

· After 24 hours, compare the two water levels.

If the water level outside the bucket has dropped more than the water level inside the bucket, you likely have a pool leak and you need to call a professional.

The outside tape was moved. You can see two full paragraphs above the tape at 0:43. "When he returns" at 0:59 you can only see one paragraph and 2-3 lines from the second paragraph. I am not denying that the test may or may not work, but he definitely moved the tape

do you try this with pump motor on or off? I would think we should try it with on to see if plumbing issue and off to see if structure leak ?

Only question with this test: The surface area of the water in the bucket is way smaller than the surface area of the entire pool. Therefore the apparent loss due to evaporation, as measured by comparing water level in the two containers, might naturally be different for the two containers over a given period of time, regardless of whether there is a leak in the pool. Anyway, if your pool has a leak, it is usually obvious. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the video! The bucket test is done with the pump off correct?

Bucket tests don't work except for large leaks because the wind does not blow on the bucket water but it does on the pool water. Most evaporation is lost by wind blowing away the water molecules off the top of the pool water. Wind can't blow in a bucket with steep sides.

A fundamentally flawed test because the surface areas are so vastly different.
