Ah that first time face reaction to Nightwish. First the hmm, will I like this, I don't really like metal, then the ok this sounds good at the start, then the open mouth as Floor starts to sing, then after a minute or so the smile settles on the face for the whole song. Next stop Taylor windmills 😂

I'm 83years old and have been listening to rock music since 1956. Nightwish are best band I've ever heard. Floor is the best vocalist I've heard also.

Hello Killermcknight and Queen Taylor ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for introducing Taylor to this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.

About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):

" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Great reaction. I am usually one to temper my expectations when going to see a band (or a movie for that matter), but I was super excited and very hyped when I went to see Nightwish. My expectations were through the roof, and they still managed to completely shatter them. It was even better than I could have managed. Floor is so charismatic and her stage presence is off the charts. And the whole band is so tight and in sync. GLS was the second to last song they played, with the last being a 20 minute song. I was smiling so hard during the last 30 minutes that I was afraid my face would get stuck like that and I would need to start doing Joker cosplay as a career.

Before the pandemic messed everything up, Floor and Henk had appeared together on a Dutch TV show where they performed the Phantom duet. Floor promised Henk that he could sing it with Nightwish. Then COVID messed it all up. So when these two consecutive shows at the Ziggo Dome were scheduled, the Phantom was not on the setlist. Before the show the band rehearsed it using only their in-ears so no one would outside heard it. So when Floor started singing there was a big reaction from the crowd followed by another one when Henk walked out.

Just wait for Floor's last note . . .

Since you mentioned Epica and likeing them as well, have you tried "Sancta Terra" by Epica with Floor Jansen as a guest vocalist as something new for your girlfriend to hear. Floor and Simone are best friends and both are trained vocalist with amazing voices and that song might also bring a few goosebumps to you and your girlfriend. New sub and thank you, I would also recommend "Storytime" by Nightwish for your girlfriend to listen to. Have a great day!

Yes, again 2 souls are taken by our Dutch Valkyrie Goddes of Metal, more Floor Jansen, watch the beste zangers 2019, she sings in different styles and different languages.. She sings O Mio Babbino Caro and from the gamecube game Final Fantasy Chronicals, Sound of the Wind... There is a video on YouTube with all the endings of GLS and a video where she even sings the Yellow Pages on a radio-show... She is working on different projects of Ayreon too, Valley of the Queens and The Day The World Break Down are good ones to start with.. have fun with Nightwish and Floor Jansen..

So, despite my moniker, I am a 73-year-old male. Been listening to Nightwish for maybe 2 years. Stumbled into listening (another reactor listening to Floor's cover of "Alone") and haven't been able to stop.
From what I have read or seen on various videos (watch some of the documentaries produced by Nightwish), Floor had been with the band about 10 months when this video was recorded. This song was NOT written with her vocal abilities in mind. Also, she has gotten inked since this video was made. Just saying.
I think my favorite Nightwish song (LOTS of "favorites") right now is "Devil and The Deep Dark Ocean", the live performance in Buenos Aries (go for the version with lyrics). It is more "metal", but it showcases Tuomas' Holopainin's (the keyboardist) compositional and song writing abilities and his ability to transmit a message simply through phrasing, chords, keys and so forth. Even without being able to decypher the lyrics from Floor and Marko's singing, you will understand the theme is "good vs. evil". And then there is Floor. Her vocal gymnastics in this song are simply astonishing.
Enjoy your journey. I have moved into listening to some of Tuomas' other compositions. Totally NOT metal is "The Life And Times of Scrooge", an album inspired by a graphic novel, "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck". A wonderful movie soundtrack for a non-existent movie!
Also, go listen to Floor sing "Vilja Lied" on the Dutch T.V. Show "Beste Zangers".
There is so much to discover. It is NEVER too late!

Discovering Nightwish and Floor Jansen 12 months ago has turned my musical world upside down and inside out. I'm deeply immersed down the Nightwish rabbit hole. Why on Earth do we not hear and see them on mainstream radio and TV? Phenomenal group of musicians all masters of their craft fronted by in my humble opinion the best vocalist that I have ever heard. It is always a pleasure to vicariously relive my first time listen to this masterpiece and so many others through great reactors like you. Thank you so much. Paul 🙏😊👍❤️
