On 30 September 2024, Peggy Hicks, Director of the Thematic Engagement, Special Procedures and Right to Development Division of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, addressed the Human Rights Council at its 57th session during its Annual discussion on the integration of a gender perspective throughout the work of the Human Rights Council and that of its mechanisms. No, it is not essential. What is essential is equal access to ALL human rights. Then there would never be an issue with people's individuality, their beliefs, or any perceived otherness. Beyond biological differences in terms of sex, gender has become an ideological construct. To be clear, people can feel or experience their bodies and social surroundings in countless ways which are often impossible to codify and therefore shouldn't be codified or pigeon-holed. All that is required is the right of freedom of expression.
