In this video I debate the pro's and con's of selling all of my gas powered BMW's for an electric EV i3 or iX BMW. Should I do it? Let me know what you think.

Hi Rich,
Thought provoking video, all the issues you raised are valid and relevant.
Nevertheless, it may be a difficult business case to justify buying an i3,
as probably the majority of your subscriber base, I would assume, are more “ old school BMW Enthusiasts”
Cheers!

I think electric cars only make sense for high mileage users. Otherwise I would think running an older car is more efficient and economical. Its not just the mining that I see as an issue its the lifespan of the vehicle as well. All that proprietary hardware and software will be useless in 15 years time and I doubt it will be worth repairing. Much like smart phones. I would think renting one from turo would give you a feel for it and a lease takeover if you really like it. That way you can try it for a while and keep the cars that matter!

I feel you too bud, I'm in the same quandary, I love the idea of not paying any tax and fuel costs. I've not looked in to the environmental impact like you said of the metals for batteries but will.

I like working on my own cars also but feel the newer the car and more advanced the less work I'll be able to do on it.

I love this video. It shows a that not all petrol heads are blind to the environment, so hats off to you for that. What I did find interesting is your take on battery manufacture and power generation. both you were well wide of the mark on.

For instance you quickly mention precious metals, something often banded about. What precious metals do you think go into a battery? You also mention Cobalt and put up a picture of a young child in Africa mining the stuff. Cobalt is indeed a problem, mined mostly in the Congo and some from child labour (although it is a tiny/tiny fraction) But fail to mention that one of the biggest users of Cobalt is in fact the oil industry. And while battery developers are actively looking to remove Cobalt (mainly because of cost) there are already batteries with no Cobalt. There is simply no alternative to the oil industry.

And of course batteries can and are being recycled.

I won't go on, but one last point, a power plant is not polluting our towns and cities, ICE cars directly reducing air quality for everyone forced to breath in this stuff. EV's are not perfect, but they would be a huge step forward not just for the Planet, but the people living on it.

Good luck Buddy, I see a Model 3 in your future. I would subscribe to see that adventure.

99% of all commuters/daily-drivers will become electric, and the rest will be enthusiast driven or too old/unreasonable to keep dailying (mostly because of less and less fuel stations in the future). Heres just hoping there wont be an added expense with driving a fossile car on the roads, especially since they will only be used by enthusiasts anyway... but that might be wishful thinking :/

Anyone known how they produce electricity? Yes, by burning coal with a lot of CO2 emissions...

Gasoline powered automobiles will still be here for a while yet. You mentioned solar you priced such technology for your house? Buying an i3 as you don't have to worry about overall miles? Awesome - I'm jealous! Fact is at the moment it's just too steep for the average Joe (myself included) at the moment. It's a luxury worry for many.
