For the texting, there's no timeout for the key; press the * (star) key in between two letters on the same button.

I remember Pong when it first came out. My younger Brother had it for Christmas. It's amazing what you can do these days. That it is so open makes me wonder why the Squelch level sensitivities aren't adjustable. Squelch is just an a2d conversion typically with a value between 0 and 255 being assigned to a number between 1 to 10. What are the assigned number's in the K5? You can change them for a UV-5r via CHIRP, so why not here? There must be bucket loads of fun to be had with this little gem.

So i for one of these in Jasons mystery boxes and threw it on the shelf. I'm glad i just found your videos, this radio is cool and has a ton of things to play with. I've always thought a good feature for an HT radio would be a doppler tracker for sats, ie you'd put in your start/end frequency and a countdown, and it would adjust the frequency as the satellite passes overhead.

I got the programming software for that radio and installed it. Co-incidentally (I wonder) I got a warning from my ISP, Virginmedia, that I had malicious software on my home network that was contacting unauthorised websites. Ran a full scan with Sophos and the programming software was detected as "unwanted" and "suspicious". I removed it and haven't had a warning since. Might be worth checking - but of course could just be a coincidence and it have been one of my kids phones or something...

I can see that s-meter being useful for foxhunting... now it just needs APRS (I know it doesn't have a GPS, but that's not "necessary")

Just installed the sbar firmware, S-meter is really great (love it) and rig is now 18-1300 MHz unlocked (great), only problem is that it will TX on all frequencies... would love to see the same firmware restricting TX to 136-174MHz & 400-470MHz

Great stuff, but what do you do in maybe 3 years when the battery is knackered and new ones are unavailable ? At least with a Baofeng you can get empty cell cases that allow full output power as well DC convertors.Those old UV5R's should still be going in 20+ years time or more because of the available accessories. I'm not sure that a Quansheng will be.

Highly recommend a $15 quansheng uv-k5(8), with the egzumer firmware (or others) it will receive and transmit between 18 to 1300mhz, receives CB and Airband, wireless frequency copy, has a spectrum analyser and encrypted text messages! Plus a usv-c charging port on the side 😸, a really solid one is the radtel rt470 10W (not the 470x or 470L which are only 5W), it does 13.8W on 145mhz and 430mhz! Unlockable by official firmware to tx between 136 up to 560 and 650-1000mhz, has airband and wireless frequency copy and a usb-C, I also highly recommend and RTL-SDR V4 and the SDRAngel app (track ships and planes by the beacons received), dump1090 and SDR Touch apps for android, also wouldn't hurt to install ATAK for android or ITAK for iOS. Enjoy 👍🏻
