It's Carrie: The Musical (the 1988 flop) vs the recent 2012 revival of Carrie: The Musical. Song used: "The Destruction" (with lyrics on screen). Which version was your favorite?

The original lyrics were absolutely scary, the effects were not the best but it surely was a great score

I wish that the lyrics could be combined. Her initial panic in the revival is more effective, but "God has seen your sinning" and so on from the original is BRILLIANT. If there was a version that did both, it would be perfect. Also, the special effects of the original with the bucket drop in the revival. I CRAVE THIS ITERATION.

I can’t decide if it’s more intense with or without the “He will burn you!” verse! It gives an almost different message. With the verse, it makes it seem like she’s going off of what Margaret was telling her and punishing them for everything. Without the verse it’s showing her so overcome with rage and anguish that she can’t even say anything while her powers are acting upon her emotions.

I absolutely adore the lyrics in the original. They’re terrifying, which is exactly what makes them the best. And adding in the lyrics from “And Eve Was Weak” was BRILLIANT. I adored the more recent version because of the vocalists, especially the actress playing Carrie. She has such a powerful voice to be so young. I love both, I simply can’t pick a favorite

Im so mad that "God has seen your sinning just beginning, etc" was cut in the revival

I love the curtain drop in the original. It's so sudden and a great way of showing Carrie trapping everyone in the gym. A great stage direction decision. The lasers, on the other hand...Carrie White is not an X-men, you know. Still, I think the original packs more of a punch.

I cannot understand why the writers chose to cut the "And Eve Was Weak" theme from "The Destruction" in the revisal. ("God has seen your sinning just beginning; Pray for your salvation from damnation. Pray or he will burn you. He will burn you.") It is SO fitting at this moment. That page of music needs to be added back into the score. Then - I think the newest version will be the optimal one.

Something about how Molly Ranson plays Carrie just kinda bugs me... my favorite personally is the actress from the Seattle performance (Keaton Whittaker) but the special effects from LA production

It's not in the video, but "The Destruction" in the 2015 Los Angeles revival was 1. awesosme, 2. much more intense/upsetting, and 3. had the single most impressive special effect I've ever seen in any play, which had Carrie shooting Chris 100 feet over the audience's head, back behind the bleachers. It was the single biggest "wow" moment I've had as an adult, the first since seeing the chandelier rise in Phantom 20 years earlier, when I was eleven.

This is one of the scariest scenes in the book and seeing it on stage is so badass

I do miss the reprise of the "god has seen your sinning just beginning/pray for your salvation from damnation" line in the 80s version, but overall the revival is better (although the recent southwark production did the effects better)

It would've been cool if they hadn't cut the "And Eve Was Weak" and had changed "he" to "she" (implying that Carrie believes she is the god that will burn the "sinners")

I liked the music and the reference to Eve Was Weak in the original, and the strobe lights looked cool (but they looked more rock concert than setting the prom on fire), but the latter had better effects and I like the actress' singing better as well (I'm not used to the higher pitched singer for the original sorry).

The Los Angeles production that recently closed at La Mirada blows them both away....combined.    They are supposed to bring the show back due to the outstanding reviews.   One of the best productions of any show I've seen ever....

the original cause it was actually scary. I can feel that the ensemble scared and plus "God has seen your sinning just beginning" Made the og a lot better. The 2012 was too short for my liking and they cut out all the good lines.

Molly surprisingly did a really good job capturing the facial expressions that Sissy Spacek did in the original movie during the prom scene

I really like 1:21 to about 2:00 and I really wish that part was incorporated into the later version. I feel like the lyrics did a great job of representing how Carrie started to turn into her mother in this scene which to me was a huge part of the destruction. Carrie became the very thing she feared, and she put the fear on everyone else.

I think that the first production just dated really quickly and the production team saw that and the audience saw that. The first production is very much a product of its time with all the neon lighting and guitar riffs. The revival was able to make it more timeless and not tied to the trends of the time period of it's opening.
