Garmin Rally Power Meter Review: Shimano SPD-SL/SPD/LOOK KEO

Garmin has launched three new power meters today, all under the new ‘Garmin Rally’ brand, which supersedes the Garmin Vector power meter lineup. The Rally series includes three pedal bodies at this point:  Shimano SPD-SL (road), Shimano SPD (typically off-road/MTB), and Look KEO (which they previously had).

However, if there are two takeaways to know from this review, it’s this: The Garmin Rally series power meter is but a spindle that fits into multiple pedal platform types that you can choose from – at least, as long as those choices are Look KEO/SPD/SPD-SL. Which of course, is the vast majority of the endurance sports pedal market, save Speedplay (and Wahoo just solved that last week).

The second thing to know is that if you already have Garmin Vector 3 pedals, then you’re also able to take advantage of this pedal portability, and switch between all of the three pedal types above – complete with an even newer battery cap design.

My only takeaway is how much I need that t-shirt.

So... Two pairs of favero assioma for one garmin? That's an easy pick!

Came to the channel because I wanted a power meter but now I just want that shirt.

Good, honnest review. The end bit about the "right" questions one should be asking oneself is spot on

I bought a pair of vector 3 pedals three weeks ago to help with my rehab. Love them so far! Glad to hear they haven’t changed much.

I was burned so many times on Vector 2 and Vector 3. Think I went through three sets of Vector 3 via Garmin's support. Not a single issue with Favero Assiomas over the last 18 months. If Garmin had moved to a sealed battery compartment, I might consider Vector again in the future. As it stands with the many iterations of battery cover, seals, baby oil, etc. Not a chance.

Still assioma duo for me. No water ingress and no need to change batteries. Plus IAV! Power meter should not be complicated to use.

Still prefer the trusty favero assioma. No need to worry about battery seal

My right side pedal seems to have just decided to die... Worked back and forth with Garmin and they sent me "new" refurb pedals after trying a battery circuit board replacement that still didn't fix the original dead pedal. All up and running smoothly again now with the new pedals. Garmin continuing to be great at customer support!

Wow, could be time to resurrect my Vector3's. I've always hated the huge, clumsy cleats for road pedals and dreamed of an SPD power meter. Thanks for this review!

Been waiting a long time for the off road pedals!

Finally SPD-SL.... great if I hadn’t already replaced everything with Keo to go with my vectors! My 3s work well fortunately.

DCR - love that t-shirt! Care to share the deets on how to own one?
As for the pedals . ..such great timing was about to purchase the V3 and then convert (From Shimano) to the Look system - finally a win.
As always great content.

Thanks for the review. I was holding out a little hope, but these are just way too expensive. Crank based meters are really beating these pedal meters.

7:20 Ha Ha - I hate those slippery tree roots just off parallel to the trail. Never say Ray doesn't give it all up for a Great Review!

Az first I was like "sweet, finally an SPD pedal powermeter!" and then I saw the prices... for 1000USD, you get a Dura Ace crankset together with the 2-sided powermeter from Stages/4iiii...

3:33 Anyone notice Ray is running a Quarq Spider with a 4iiii left side?

Nice review as always although I have to admit my interest waned when you mentioned the price! I know power meters are expensive, they were never gonna be 200 bucks but there’s always the hope that maybe this is the year that power meters will become more mass market... hey ho maybe 2022 then!!!

So I'll wait to see if the Rally are more reliable than the Vector's. I'm hoping for a new Favero model. The CR 1/3N batteries are rather pricey and harder to come by.
