Identity Provider (IdP): Okta acts as the identity provider in this scenario. It manages user identities, authentication, and authorization.

Service Provider (SP): The service or application that users want to access. The SP relies on the IdP (Okta) for authentication and user information.

Here's a high-level overview of how Okta SAML works:

User initiates access: When a user attempts to access a SAML-enabled application or service, they are redirected to the Okta login page.

Authentication: The user enters their credentials (username and password) on the Okta login page. Okta authenticates the user's identity.

SAML assertion: After successful authentication, Okta generates a SAML assertion, which is an XML-based security token containing information about the user's identity and attributes.

Redirect to SP: Okta sends this SAML assertion to the SP (the application or service the user wants to access). This is typically done through the user's web browser.

SP verification: The SP receives the SAML assertion from Okta and verifies its authenticity and validity by checking the digital signature of the assertion.

User access granted: If the SAML assertion is valid, the SP grants the user access to the application or service without requiring them to log in again. This is the essence of single sign-on (SSO).
