Danny Way vs The Great Wall 10 Years Later

Ten years ago today, July 9th, 2005, Danny Way jumped the Great Wall of China. I got invited and needless to say I went. The thing was massive. Most of the DC heads were there: Colin, Dyrdek, Ellis (beat me for 100 bones on a pivot fakie). Friday night Danny told me he just wanted to get it over with. He climbed 57 stairs and just went for it. He got the wobbs and got rinsed. I thought it was over. They took him away in an ambulance and I thought he was going home. Seeing as how the ramp cost 5-million dollars, Saturday dawned and he was there. I couldn’t believe it. After a quick wheel change and some Cortisone, he stood on the brink of eternity. He jumped the wall but couldn’t make the 38-foot quarterpipe. It was one of the gnarliest things I’ve ever seen. Danny is a terminator. The whole country had a mandatory work stoppage so everyone could see it. He invented it and he did it. If you ever see him, look into his eyes. He doesn’t play. Saw him at the hard rock in vegas during the sports and music festival 3d when he was jumping off of the helicopter into the half pipe. We were riding in an elevator up with him and Colin who needed to setup a new board. He signed his old one and gave it to me, which my jackass brother traded for meth years later.

Danny was talking about how he 'tweaked' his shoulder. It was several years before the great wall but it's one of my greatest memories. Him doing the great wall didn't surprise me at all. The man is a legend.

Legends/Pioneers wont be forgotten no matter what the world thinks of us lowly skater scum we have documentation of our legends/idols shredding land mark upon landmark of the worlds greatest spots. But this is like our flag on everest...people are going to know skateboarding forever. Its a fucking wonder of the world and we skated it skaters have a person in our community that gaped the great wall. Truly dope to see it over again. Nothing like a fringe sub culture to say fuck you to the odds. We never had to defend it it defends itself. Its why we love it. It lives, and will live on; nothing sounds sweeter
