The fact that she tell him to stop just shows that shes kind hearted even though her teaching make her life a living hell

I bet she realized how difficult it is to remember something when you're hurting and/or being humiliated.

The fact that everyone just stood there and watched proved how much they hated her

Honestly, who wouldn't fucking snap when you're getting asked questions and you genuinely don't know the answer but still get hurt for answering it wrong?

The fact that when the nun was hitting the student, she started developing a smirk until the student says that she doesn’t know. That toxic behavior of an actress is admirable.

“You beat the child yet she begs for mercy on your behalf” that was DEEP

Yep. My dad went to catholic school. He was beat over and over by nuns. Once a nun blamed him for something he didnt do grabbed him by the hair and slammed his head on the desk. His dad (my grandpa) went down to school and threatened to beat them the same way. They never touched my dad again.
I think some people are confused. First off my dad was born in 1958 so he was in school in the 60s and 70s. He attended a Catholic school in the 60s. Yes he had nuns. Not brothers. I'm not lying. My father is not a liar. He's been through things most of you would couldn't ever fathom. I'm just sharing something he has shared with me multiple times. Also we're talking about Akron Ohio in the 60s. Way different than where you and your family are from.

Just in case you were wondering - the way to get alkali from ashes is to dissolve them in water and then pass the solution through a filter. The usual process is take a barrel, fill it about a quarter way with straw to make the filter, then fill the rest with ash and then pour in water and let is sip through the straw and out of the hole/tap at the bottom.

The solution is going to come out pretty diluted so then you boil it to get rid of water.

And judging by mention of Lye and Oil/tallow they are talking about making soap...

“You beat the child and yet she begs for mercy on your behalf. Perhaps she should be the teacher.” That was a HARD line

It shows, when you hurt someone severely and when they beg for mercy for you to not be beaten, that person is more forgiving then that nun.

This hit hard, literally. I was abused by the nuns at our school. I spoke the truth about it and no one listened. No. One. 😢

"Should we stop this?"
"Nah let her cook."

Great lesson for some who believe they are more mature than those they teach.

My mother got smacked by the teacher ( nun) at her school, for " not listening." My mother was deaf. One day she did it again and my mother snapped, grabbed the ruler ( big thick wooden rulers back then) and smacked her across the face with it. My mum was sent home and after having a talk with my Nan ( her mum) and her aunty, it was suggested she may have a hearing issue. My Nan took her to the doctor and sure enough, she was completely deaf in one ear and had partial hearing in the other. She was 15 years old when this happened and then she recieved her first hearing aid. When she went back to school, the nun was gone. New teacher.

This show takes place in the residential schools of Canada, when the First Nations were stripped of their rights and forced to attend what the European colonizers called "school." They wanted to spread their culture, which was mostly Christianity, onto the First Nations. Many "students" had to face harsh punishments such as putting their hands on hot pans, washing their mouths with lye soap, or being hit (which was shown in the video). 0:19 when the nun said, "Don't speak that godless filth in my house, " the girl being hit was cursing at the nun in her native language, which was at the time would result in a punishment.

Just so y’all know this is a representation of residential schools in Canada, that is yea technically her student but the student is more akin to a prisoner and the teacher is more like a guard

“If I speak in the tongue of man and if angles, but I have no love, I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal”
Especially meaning you can teach the word of god but if you do so without love or with cruelty towards others, it’s meaningless.

I think that applies to many things in life. If you do something but you do it for the wrong reasons or you hurt others to do it, it’s just wrong and hollow. You can work at a soup kitchen but if you just do it to earn brownie points then you’re not actually the good person they think you are. It’s normal to be a little selfish, it’s what keeps humans alive, but there’s a line

My grandmother was raised like this. Her mother died and her father gave her and all her siblings up for adoption. The center she ended up in was run by priests and nuns and they were abusive this way to her and her brother. She left the place when she was 16. She endured such pain in life but thrived in the life she made for herself. Most amazing sweet loving woman I've ever known. It's so sick to know places were this way, and many are still.. funny how its always the extra religious ones who are psychotic.
