The science of water sustainability | TechKnow

From space, the Earth is a big blue planet covered 70 percent in water. However, a closer look reveals that only two and a half percent of that is fresh water, with only one percent being easily accessible to keep our 6.8 billion inhabitants alive and well.

On TechKnow, we explore the possible solutions to address water scarcity through science, and explore the effect these new initiatives could have in the larger agricultural areas around the world. We also explore technological advancements that are having a quantifiable impact on conserving fresh water through innovation.

Most interestingly, in modern times, we built our societies on the idea that water was abundant and unlimited...

One thing I don't understand is why collecting rain water is illegal. Here it is (Illinois USA) last time I checked anyway. I find that absurd, if done properly, I believe it would save so much drinking water. I'd rather use collected rain water for my gardens and lawn during the dog days of summer when we go forever between rain days.

Great well rounded documentary as always and a bit off topic, but AJ you are making an impact in the West, I'm a white British national and from the work of Al Jazeera and others I'm more informed about the world and care more about everyone because of you - you are creating more love in the world by reconnecting people to it with matter of facts, thanks. It will be very sad for humanity if the Gulf nations against Qatar get their way, you are helping to change the world clearly.

Every year how much rainfall the world received? How much rain water we stored every year ?In United states alone how much rainfall every year? Why we are going to use expensive things to store water why we not more cheaper things like to make small rainwater dams and lakes etc.

Trees catch water from fog. They introduce it to the soil at the top of a hill where it can trickle down the hill to supply the hillside.

How are the beads cleaned and reclaimed? Is this energy efficient?

I think we need to protect our waters more... aw, couldn't lie about it- get a bit nervous sometimes seeing this- don't like our animals getting hurt or our waters being contaminated. Imagine what it would like? I miss it too much- want to swim deep in the sea!

I want those washing beads like now in America at my local grocery store. I am all about saving at water as much as they charge for water consumption in Michigan.

1. What impact on the eco and bio system does it have if water is gained out of the air and of fogg? - Yes things are becoming dry. Desertification! Don't need to be a scientist to get this conclusion.
2. Doing laundry is not just about filtering purple colour out of water.

im assume that a metal mesh would work the best, especially if the metal is cold( could be cooled)

Why nobody trying to manutwvture water. Or squeeze water from the air above the seas

Messing with weather is a bad idea. Extracting moister from the air will have causal affects that will only cause a runaway climate disaster more complications. When the solution are much simpler. And makes water a communal asset rather than a commodity. Recycling of water at the base of use, is one way to conserve water. Growing food with technology that is intergrated at the point of housing is yet another way to conserve water. Just 2 examples of water recycling and conservation. A 3rd would be rain water collection and use to water gardens and lawns.

By 3:33 the doc had so frequently jumped madly from scene to scene I left because I don't like getting blinked off as if watching a TV commercial edited by a meth freak. However, if the doc was aimed at 2 year olds and dogs, it makes perfect sense to provide blink off for viewers with super short attention spans.

I think that host has constipation due to drinking of contaminated water

this is great but I hope these folks are also concentrating on some 3rd world countrys where they have no rainfall or only have access to very dirty water. I see many charities raising money to drill wells in those areas. Certainly not any gfog at all of evern close to the oceans.
