New Layout Build - Water effects for the canal and detailing the office building

Taken a while to put this one together. In this video I use lots of small details to add some interest to the bottom of the canal. Then add some woodland scenics realistic water using modge podge for the water effects on top.

Finish off with a look at the office building I've been working on. Still more work to be done on that but I'm pleased with the results so far. I've been wanting to progress with that building for some time.

Model making is a deceptive hobby. You start making a model of one thing (in your case railway, in my case a model ship) and you end up having to know a lot about all sorts of other things - what kind of cars they had in that time, what buildings typically looked like, what offices were like, how much graffiti looks realistic, phone boxes, road markings, what stuff is in a junk yard. There's a never-ending range of detail you need to know about to make a convincing model. And sir, you have the knowhow and talent to make a VERY convincing model. Congratulations. It looks almost finished. Only a couple more decades to go!

This is amazing.

Most period railway layouts are nostalgia pieces of idealised childhoods being better than now. Yours is of proper late 80's grot of detritus in the street and offices with busted blinds.

It's glorious.

Yep, the absolute essentials for a canal, shopping trolleys, tyres, and traffic cones.
We used to take the bikes out of the canals and build a good one out of 2 or 3.
Ahh the good old days 🤣
Great update as usual 👍

I've come back to watch this again as it is probably my favourite section of the layout. The '80s industrial vibe is done so well. I expect Mike Baldwin to come flying around the corner at any moment. Spot on

Great work on this canal. All that's needed now is a shopping trolley on its side and a submerged bicycle. Really like the salvage yard. Well done.

That's definitely the grim Thatcherian dystopia I fled as a youth. Bravos from Canada. You're a master of the craft.

It just keeps getting better and better. The canal and office building are perfect. Great modeling!! Thanks for sharing. Cheers - Larry.

Outstanding attention to detail. Too often in model worlds everything is pristine and new looking whereas the reality is very different. I think in the UK if you can't get your hands on an old mattress or shopping trolley to sling in a canal, the council are obliged to supply them.

Dave, I CRY every time you do scenic work on your layout !!! I might suggest to you and other doing water work that before one starts pouring that a very light wood sealer is coated on the bottom of the wood so leaks don't happen.

This river scene is great, but I would think have a low light in the tunnel since it seems to be a public passageway and thus the city would have a light in it, ( yes I know you said why you didn't ).

In any case YOUR WORKMANSHIP is WONDERFUL, well done SIR

The attention to detail is more than mind blowing. Its the big bang!!

The aethetics are cool dystopian, especially to someone who loves canals and classic cars

Love your use and details of rubbish, grime and general muck. Much more realistic than the super clean and perfect toy like layouts.

Great job once again, goes to show how thinking outside the box can give some great results with the added details ontop of the first pour of resin. What a grotty place! Nailed it.
