The Alberto Peña, MD, Colorectal Center at Cincinnati Children’s is the first and most comprehensive pediatric colorectal center in the world.

Our surgeons and nurses collaborate with other pediatric specialists at Cincinnati Children's to provide truly multidisciplinary care for patients. All of the services and support our families need are available here under one roof.

Founded by renowned surgeon Alberto Peña, the center is an international leader in pediatric care, research and education related to complex colorectal conditions. Dr. Peña revolutionized the treatment of pediatric colorectal patients in 1980, when he introduced a surgical procedure called the posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP), or pull-through procedure. Since then, this complex reconstructive surgery has been adapted to the treatment of Hirschsprung disease, gynecologic and urologic conditions, pelvic tumors and other colorectal disorders.

Our surgeons perform approximately 650 colorectal procedures each year – more than any other center in the world. And our week-long outpatient Bowel Management Program has helped hundreds of children with colorectal conditions.

Since opening in 2005, the center has served children from 88 countries and all 50 states. In just one year alone, we served 735 unique patients from 24 countries. About 90 percent of our patients travel to Cincinnati Children’s from outside our immediate area.
