I'm finally in a position where I can afford the hobby, but it's so damn expensive, that I don't WANT to afford it, and I can't justify it to myself. This is why I've been falling out of love with the game for the last few years now.

The thing is, at this rate the Warhammer "community" don't deserve better than they get. They want big Grandma Wendy to step on them. I keep getting happier and happier for my printer. Printed a gorgeous Great Unclean One for a friend a couple of weeks ago and he told me he'd been eyeing one from the store but couldn't justify it. (He is a grown ass man with a grow ass salary.) I then went and looked and realized it cost as much as my printer did when I bought it. The GW carousel is simply insane and I can't respect the community collectively for riding it anymore.

The prices are just silly at this point and have been for a good while. I recently returned to the hobby. I used to play Imperial guard (not whatever they are called these days due to copyright reasons) and guard army was expensive to build even back then. When I visited the hobby store and saw a single commissar with a price tag of 30€ (roughly 1€ per point) I had hard time not laughing.
Instead I bought whole bunch of quality STL files so I can print my second imperial guard force.

I've collected Games Workshop products since the end of the nineteen-eighties and had countless hours of happiness. I can afford the hobby pretty comfortably, but here's the thing: I don't get enough joy from the hobby to justify spending that amount of money per miniature since the price hiking habit really took hold of G.W. I have a good backlog in my pile of shame, but that's as far as it will go now. I'm in my 60th year so I guess G.W. won't miss me anyway, but it's the younger people I feel for.

GW won't lose marketshare to their direct competitors, they'll lose it to the 3d printing market. We're very close to folks recognizing the absolute better value proposition, even if someone prints minis for you, than what GW is offering. With 8k and 12k printers being reasonably priced, and some resins being on par with GW plastic in workability, detail, and durability, we are hurtling over the uncanny valley of the differences in mass production vs home production at break neck speeds. GW is sawing at their own throat at this point...

Whatever you do, don’t compare the price of 40K tanks to 1/35 scale tanks… which are bigger, cheaper, more detailed, and often come with stuff like photo etched brass…

Anybody find the line " well, it is an expensive hobby" as a weird flex. Like we do the assembly and invest to paint the figures, they literally shove unpainted components in box and slap price tag based on a Meta that spins wildly every three months. "For the stock and the Shareholders" should be their battle cry.

I don't think its as simple as saying warhammer is cheaper than other luxury hobies. My other hobby is scuba diving, which is notoriously expensive to get started. I just bought a new dive computer which was just over £200 but my old one lasted me arround 25 years before needing replaced. The last codex i dought was out dated by the time i got it home. Ok it may be a cheaper hobby by comparison but is it worth it? For me no ill just print what i want to paint.
