During the early days of the naval warfare in the Second World War, a daring submarine captain challenged the British defenses to attack the heart of the Royal Navy's surface fllet anchored at the naval base of Scapa Flow, in northern Scotland.

Günther Prien was the first German submarine captain to be awarded the coveted Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, which he received after his successful and daring attack against the British battleship HMS Royal Oak in October, 1939. He was made of the first national heroes by the Nazi propaganda machine and had a brief but intensive career leading wolfpacks of U-boats in the Atlantic.

Just a little correction, Type VII-B performances were 17 KNOTS on surface (1 knot = 1, 852 km/h) and 8 knots submerged. With 17 km/h a submarine would have been as slow as a merchant ship and could now have raided against them. Nice video. Thanks.

I read the book about Gunther Prein when I was at school in the early 80s. It was a gripping nerve wracking read as the U-47 stealthily snuck into Scapa Flow and then searched for targets in a seemingly empty anchorage. Finally the Royal Oak was spotted and the attack commenced. The drama with the crazy torpedoes only seemed to add to the tension of the attack. Once Royal Oak was finally hit and starting to sink, thoughts turned to trying to escape via the way that the submarine had come in and again skill, judgement and luck all played a part.
Like I said, it was a gripping read.

A truly remarkable soldier. i had earlier heard that he and his boat went missing in action. I did not know that there was documented proof of the destruction of U47.

You list off the speed on the surface as 19kmh and 7.5kmh submerged. You are wrong, it isn't in kilometers. It is is nautical miles per hour. Which equates to 32.8kmh surface and 14.1kmh submerged.
