Today is my 69th birthday. My daughter asked me what I'd like to do today and I answered, , I just want to binge-watch Roots & Refuge from the very first episode. Oh and cake. Lots and lots of cake.

The Fall garden is the easiest garden to grow. More rain, cooler temps and less pest pressure. I understand it depends on your zone but if you can keep growing, GROW! 🌱

I’m in SoCal 10a. You used to share about being sad the garden is going to sleep, but it gives you a rest. Be ready…you’re not gonna get as much rest!! Although it’s slower, less bugs, less sun issues, less attention needed, but you need to keep planting, feeding, harvesting, and preserving. With building the new stuff, you’re gonna get tired! 🥰

We are moving to our 5 acre homestead and it's killing me to not have a garden right now. I am living vicariously through you right now.

You always talk about our waiting room being a classroom. I hope you can appreciate how valuable you are as one of our teachers. 💚 Thank you!

I have never known anyone who did a fall garden. We are neighbors in NC and you are already teaching me things. Thanks.

If you still don’t have a greenhouse or don’t have enough space indoors by the time you want to start next year’s plants, try winter sowing in milk jugs. They work great.

Hi Jess,
Found you by way of Justin Rhodes! My husband and I live in Lexington, SC and are so excited to watch you and your family build your homestead. We are actually starting our search for some property to start our homestead! Looking forward to the continued inspiration and knowledge. Thank you. Sherry😕😮💕

I love watching your kitchen garden come together! I'm in 7a and the garden is in transition, tomatoes and peppers are still producing and fall seeds are starting to sprout. I'm planting more in the fall garden this year than ever before, trying some completely new varieties and hoping to build up a larger stock of root veg for winter. Thanks for bringing us along as you create these new garden spaces!

I just wanted to pop on and say thanks for all you do. You've taught me to love gardening so much and to enjoy the process. I started gardening at first to save some money on fresh veggies for my guinea pigs, but now my family has actively let me expand the backyard garden into a human food garden. It's so rewarding, and you've taught me so many things over the few years I've been consuming your content <3

It is important to consider our situation as well as cost. I am enjoying watching you in your new space. This year I’ve taken care of friends house and patio plants while they were in the hospital with Covid so when they came home they had the beauty of living plants to enjoy. They are home and rehabbing, Thank GOD! Consequently my garden did not have the normal attention I usually give it. I have gotten plenty tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, berries and malibar spinach. Unfortunately plenty ragweed and grass has invaded also. Fall will have to be clean out and prep for next spring. 👋🏼😊

Greetings from Germany! Even here we can grow things through Fall/Winter. There are enough salads and other things that grow well, even if its freezing sometimes :)

Dear Jess, you encourage me always. I’m not a homesteader just a gardener from a long line of amazing gardeners who have inspired me. I carry their love for gardening so deep in my heart. Thanks and Blessings.

WRT growing in the winter, there's one place you have to keep warm. That's inside your home. There are crop varieties that can be grown as house plants.
Tiny Tim Tomato, Leaf lettuce, rosemary, etc.
One just needs a sunny window.

?? Would you mind doing an episode on growing specific garden plants for your animals- what plants cows, sheep, pigs, chickens like the most, and what nutritionally supplements their grazing the best. I love the idea of having a garden for my animals as well as my family! Thanks so much ❣️
