Alexander's comment about Spain in the 17th century is spot on, and I see many parallels. Spain was the undisputed superpower at the time, and they were getting huge amounts of gold and silver from their colonies. Instead of investing in their own economy, they got entangled in endless conflicts in Europe that became a financial drain on their treasury. The Bourbon kings who inherited this huge empire were utterly incompetent, and were unable to manage the crisis when it all imploded. Like the saying goes, history doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes, and the current US situation is rhyming quite nicely.
