2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe First Drive | Genesis Is Trying Something New

America's youngest luxury car brand started off by selling solid luxury cars with a strong value proposition, but over the last decade things have been changing. For 2025 Genesis is introducing their first SUV "Coupe" and with it comes a new strategy: premium pricing for a premium offering. While the GV80 is still a "good value", value is no longer the headline for this Genesis and indeed it'll actually start with a higher price tag than the BMW X6. Don't worry, you still get more for your money, but at this point Genesis requires a different kind of conversation than before...

They did a decent job honouring the concept. Hope they are serious about the magma performance line though

I don't care about any of the flaws! I want it!
I am a FAN BOY 🎉🤸🏾‍♂️
This will be a winner even if no one buys it. Only certain types of ppl buy SUV "coupes" anyway😁

I would say the value proposition is still STRONG, after all how much is that X6 when you add all the items that come STANDARD on the GV80? I always hate when base price to base price is compared, it's very disengenious when the equipment spread between those two base models is VAST.

The $75, 000 BWM has WAY LESS features, equally spec'd the BMW is way more money

Please stop using LCD as a blanket term for every screen. This uses OLED for the 27" display, it's an entirely different (self-emissive vs backlit) display technology. The Cadillac Escalade also has OLED displays, though it seems the IQ and ICE refresh are going back to LCD for the massive 55" combined display. I also believe the Q6 E-Tron and new A5 will also use OLED for the 14.5" infotainment display.

I think Genesis is doing it right so far. You just get so much bang for the buck than all of its rivals. The only issue I have is Genesis needs more dealerships in the US as you cannot have any service done at a Hyundai/Kia dealership unless that dealership happens to have a Genesis dealership attached to it. I have a 2022 GV70 Sport Prestige which I love so much but driving 8hrs round trip to have any service performed is a bit much. I would totally consider buying a GV80 Coupe but maybe if my city gets a dealership nearby.

Great review. Sounds like it's extremely quiet with hardly any road noise coming through the camera/microphone..

*Question, ... how do you🙄know 🙄it's going to lease less?? ... I've been waiting on this vehicle to be released and am ready now to buy/lease, .. or whatever works best.*

Great insight and synergy from your collaboration, guys! I love the looks of the GV80, on a par with the Cayenne Coupe. However, I was hoping the price would be in the $70’s range.

Those seat belts are nice but remind me of wearing a crossing patrol belt when I was in elementary

Agreed with your remarks about Genesis' miss on the passenger seat features.

This is a beautiful car. I really wanted one but they took to long to come out with it. I will wait a year or two to see what happens with it in terms of reliability. (Gonna let Genesis work the kinks out)

Genesis WILL be doing hybrids, they announced a few months ago

This is a nice looking car. I’d like to see similar screen and climate controls in the Electrified GV 70. People who can afford this will determine if it’s worth it, but it does seem awfully expensive to me.

That 20 mpg highway is where Genesis falls behind Germans. Engine(plus trans), being the core of an ICE car, is so inefficient at similar power levels. BMW X5 50i has 22 mpg hwy and often beats it in real world.

5.8s for a 409hp sporty suv is actually a bit disappointing. That’s slower than something like Explorer ST or Aviator. The standard equipment is good, but for someone paying 87k for a sporty SUV with 409hp, it should be 0.5s faster to be more appealing.

I truly hope Genesis consider bringing the hybrid versions of their vehicles this in my view will be the best selling point to sway the German shoppers to step away from the more recognized luxury brands everyone has grown accustomed to.

Alex, I hope you paid Sofyan top dollar for his camera work. 🤩Getting back to the GV80, I have never and will never understand coupe-sedans or coupe-CUVs. 🤨
