1:18 it's not a trend. It's simply bigger batteries and LCDs are thick parts. To put weight in limit and keeping phone thin they use plastic back. Not rocket science.

What's the advantage of macro lense! It's image quality is not that great aswell. And you can take the macro shots from ultra wide and main lense aswell!
