Mega Man X7 is one of the most hated Mega Man games of all time, and I am here to totally blow everyone's mind by saying...yeah, it is as bad as they say, but we are going to spend the next 40 minutes level-headedly explaining why, compared to the roast I gave the game five years ago. So, I hope you strap in and enjoy the ride!

The best things about this game IMO are Axl (though not a fan of locking X behind him but I still liked him enough as a character) and the Japanese Opening “Code Crush.” Everything else I think it worthy of scrutinization and it deserves the reputation it has.

Anteator is actually one of the more tolerable voices in this game. He doesn't sound half bad, at least to me.

Axl sounds "bad", but at least it feels more intentional. He sounds like a typical whiny kid, which sorta fits him, so I'd give him a pass.

X is just laughably bad though.

The game's speed and precision is completely gone and it feels like a cash grab. X8 would go on to improve significantly thankfully, granted not to the same heights as the first 4.

I really hate how clunky and slow movement feels in 3D. X was all about really satisfying movement and it’s not here at all.

I think comparing to Naughty Dog is more than fair. Capcom can seriously outperform most of the industry when they try. For example DMC 4 looking as good as it did at a completely solid 60 FPS in 2008, when most devs were going for overly brown and grey, graphically impressive but drab games that often struggled with 30. Platinum Games couldn't manage Bayo 1 at a solid 60 two years later.

I'm out of my depth on this one but I've seen DMC 5 be described as masterfully optimized and as such able to run beautifully on hardware you wouldn't think could handle it.

Capcom can put the rest of the industry to shame on a technical level when they really try. Or at least Itsuno's team can anyway.

I think Mega Man could actually work well in 3D. If they go the Metroid Prime route and make it first person while also keeping the platforming intact, I think a 3D Mega Man game would be great.

I'm just convinced they didn't finish the game. I'm convinced that they were like 82% done with production and we're just forced to send out a unfinished product. Does it have its ups absolutely, but there are far too many downs to outweigh them.

The problem is you're seeing this as a "game" where players have fun. This was nothing more than Capcom needing to write a paycheck for stakeholders and X7 was next in the hopper.

I'd be impressed if someone made a mod that fixed a number of issues with the game and made it more fun as a result

Legends aged poorly, but it's still better than X7.

Ah yes, people nowadays love to shit on old 3D games because they're "dated by modern standards", yet this game that was dated before it even came out. It's literally 6th gen Bubsy 3D, due to how it goes against basic rules of design that were established with SM64

Edit: BURN TO THE GROUND, BURN TO THE GROUND,

For Sigma 2nd phase, if you stand at the bottom edge of that platform then you don't even need Zero's reflect attack, Sigma's punch would simply miss and give you time for free damage.

Theres a universe out there where this was the PSP game it was meant to be and Maverick Hunter X was a full sized console release.

I can't stress enough how *poorly designed* Mega Man X7 is, especially after the creation of Mega Man Legends 1 & 2's game-designs.
Capcom has no excuse for producing a game of this incredibly lackluster caliber with the Keiji Inafune still employed at that company.

To make the analysis simple, this X7's subpar game-design can summarized as the following points:

- The story-line makes NO SENSE; the plot points are not logical in the slightest when compared to the previous Mega Man X games. In fact, the story-line even contradicts itself at such events.
- The game-play is abysmally bad; there is no way that the Capcom game programmers Play-Tested this game before releasing it because how difficult the game-play is to use.
- The game's sound design is implemented at a incredibly unprofessional level: Just listen ANY character dialogue in this game (Ex. Flame Hyenard's and his "Burn To The Ground" audio recording during his boss battle).

I do not think this game needs any more explanation than this; it is the only Mega Man game that I would NEVER EVER want to play again for the rest of my life and be happy about it~

Excellent review. Really enjoyed the bits where you talk about the designers comments and the damage difference between the 2 versions. I really have to replay this game because I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it the last time. This might be the only objectively bad game that I like that I would call a "guilty pleasure" of mine due to nostalgia from back when I was a kid.
