The City of Toronto moved to clear another homeless encampment early on Wednesday morning.

The action at Lamport Stadium comes a day after the city cleared an encampment in a downtown park.

The city has cited the risk of fires and the need to make parks accessible to everyone as factors behind the encampment clearings.

Police said nine people were arrested during the eviction of Alexandra Park encampment residents on Tuesday, seven of them for trespassing.

Katherine Ward joins us with reaction from the community.

They aren't "residents" they are trespassers

No sympathy for the park squatters considering they have been offered alternative housing by the city. Let me guess they prefer to spend the summer sharing drugs and getting wasted with friends in the park until the winter comes?

its not an eviction because they are not legally entitled to be there

If you think people should just be able to settle in a public park, go to the washroom anywhere and engage in any behavior. Then invite someone to live with you . Live up to your principles, dont just float in and protest because I guarantee if you lived next to this you wouldnt stand it etheir.
I was born in Toronto, it is true there was always homelessness but not to this degree and the solution cant be anarchy. For those with mental illness I sympathize, fact is we have decided that we wont compel people to get help, which I disagree with .
If you believe that people are better off living in a park then you are as mentally I'll as the people in the encampment

Don’t charge the arrested people. Just let them invite those homeless people to live in their place.

So they basically want zero accountability for the trash, beer bottles, serringes and crime they bring with their squatting and everyone should pretend like it isn't happening for the sake of...what exactly?...

I fully support the City's efforts to clear these so-called camps. City parks are paid for by taxpayers who deserve to be able to enjoy them without sidestepping used needles, condoms, human waste and heaven knows what else! These are public parks NOT flop houses and tenements.

Can't normalize this way of living it isn't a long term solution or viable process.

It is not safe or humane for these people to be living outside and it's also unfair for local residents to loose their public parks. If it were a case of poverty alone, they would take the city up on their offer of housing so it's most likely an issue of addiction and mental health which should be dealt with by remanding them into custody of a proper treatment facility so that they could be safe and cared for properly. Unfortunately, we seem to be more invested in 'free will' and the cheapest option rather than compassion for those who can't care for themselves.

Even if their was sufficient affordable housing there's always gonna be people who can't or won't live any other way. In the streets.
