Why the Triangle Bow

In many Iai Ryuha styles, you are taught to put your nose into the triangle you make when you bow sitting down. Why do we bow like this? It’s not only because it looks the most polite. This is to protect your face in case someone presses your head down. This is a fine example of keeping one's eyes on the opponent even when not looking at them. It’s also important not to show the back of your neck when you bow. This is something you would have done when you get your head decapitated. In my tea ceremony Ryuha, we bow like this to not touch the floor as much as possible. In the past, Noh plays were performed for high-ranking samurai, so the hands are opened wide, and the head is bowed as deeply as possible. Since the bowing style differs from Ryuha to Ryuha, please pay attention to the details of the bowing.

I briefly studied Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, and the bows in it are remarkably shallow (even the full seated bow/ “kowtow” is just a slight inclination with the hands to the sides just touching the floor in a mudra-like position) with the exception of bowing to Soke, where the head touches the floor.

This apparently stems from the fact that the Yagyu family were vassals to the Tokugawa and served as their sword instructors, and that prestige put them in pretty high standing in regard to etiquette. Made for some funny moments when a local kendo club came to observe our practice group: “Why are you guys so rude?!” “Eh, that’s just how we bow.”

Had a martial arts teacher claim you make the triangle because if then someone chopped your head of, it would be held in the triangle and not roll around. He actually believed it, the class was a lot more sceptical.

Interesting, I studied at an mma school for years that had karate origins and we still kept the tradition of bowing but taught to keep an eye while bowing

Your videos are amazing and I love all of it. I am a heathen or pagan so I follow and practise the ancient pre Christian faith of my European ancestors, in those traditions bowing is forbidden. We believe in facing the storm always with out heart open in joy even in battle, even battle was trained to feel like bliss. It was forbidden because our some of the gods, they never asked us for worship because they are our kin, they don't let you into the halls once dead unless u go in standing tall, for if you look away it was concidered shame.. so very interesting different traditions. I was wondering smth. How can they bow (rei) when they do the Tea Ceremony Ryuha? Won't they have a back pain? I have seen few examples of that. Some do the light rei, like they're very elegant, while others do a mix of Tea Ceremony Ryuha with the Triangle bow. Any insight info?
