Best way to get ahead in Stellaris is to maximise food production at the expense of all else and insult all your neighbors, you'd think they would attack you but actually they find it pretty impressive, oh and also you have to make sure that you pick the doomsday scenario and don't evacuate, its actually a trick and after the 60 years or so that it breaks apart you get an event where the world stabilises into a gaia world with a special modifier

Ayy stellaris! I'm all for seeing more!
Here are some tips:
* First, that origin you picked is probably not the best if you haven't played in a while. Might wanna start with the default one "Prosperous unification" or "Mechanist". You get a slight headstart over other origins in both, and you don't have to do diplomatic shenanigans as much.
* Send out science ships to explore around constantly so you find events and anomalies that can give you some really neat stuff when you study them. A good thing to do is to look at your situation log screen and complete more situations in there to get goodies.
* Try to keep your empire sprawl under 100 during the early few game years by sticking as much as possible to capping systems that blocks other empire's expansion while you build an economy to actually conquer your "reserved" sectors. And make sure that in your policies your borders start closed. And in your diplomacy with other empires, make sure that you close your borders to those you don't want to find building in your backyard. The reason to keep the empire sprawl below 100 or close to 100 is because it begins to slow down your research and etc when you go over. You can stomach that later on when you got an economy, but early on it can make you fall behind.
* Try not to spend influence on things. You only get up to 4 per months these days. Making agreements with others and pacts eat up your monthly influence income. And you need it to expand, put down claims and do some other things.
* You really want to gain better tech faster than everyone else usually. So building labs and producing extra consumer goods is good.
* By default, building habitation district on planets open up building slots.
* Did I mention tech is good?
* To build fleets, use the fleet manager. It makes your life easier.
* Picking expansion or discovery as your first ascension to fill up is usually a pretty good bet. Just make sure to always unlock everything in one before starting another, so you can get your ascension perk faster.

There's a lot more, but that should help a bit in the early game. Mid-game crisis and late game crisis are what you should aim to be prepared for ultimately during the early game 2200 to 2300.

Yeah, having tried out the Feudal Overlord start I would not have recommended it on someone who is effectively new to the game.

number one tip for stellaris: Pops are important. They're not just another resource that is produced over time, but are the basis for your economy. The are like factories in hoi4. The best way to control your empire is by controlling your pops. Research is the most valuable resource, get as much as you can without tanking the economy.

Personally I found stellaris the easiest paradox game to pick up. There's not depth the the gameplay like EU or CK or even HOI, there's just one map and one way to interact with everything.
