All dogs have special talents that make them well-suited for different activities or jobs.
Some are good at agility, others are great at finding things with their nose, and some are just awesome for keeping your lap warm!
But there are also a couple of dog breeds that excel at livestock protection, making them excellent assets for your farm or homestead.
In this video we have listed 10 of the best breeds for protecting your goats, sheep, chickens, or whatever other animals you raise.

Ill never forget the pyranean dog that lived near me as a kid. He would sit at his gate most of the day and then take his walk. The went round the same route each time and carried his favourite teddy with him. Everyone knew him. A beautiful gentle creature.

Had several Pyrs. They were calm, seemed half-asleep much of the time, BUT, they were actually highly attentive and instinctively protective. They would lie on the ground like a bundle of laundry, but if you looked you could see that their eyes were always following the action. On numerous occasions they saw and reacted to real threats before I was even aware of them.

With the above being said, for our last livestock guardian, we switched to an Anatolian Shepherd (less hair, and less slobber). This dog, Eonan, who was with us for 12 years, was the most amazing animal that I have been around. Every positive trait of a Pyr, but bigger, faster, smarter, and utterly fearless---by himself, he had interactions with feral hogs, mountain lions, bears, wandering dogs, and many, many coyotes! Low prey drive, but compelled to protect what he thought "was his." Often during wild turkey youngling season we would look up to see a Turkey hen followed by a line of her chicks, with Eonan trotting along, bringing up the rear, escorting them through "his area."

By himself he patrolled and protected 80 acres, 5 homes, goats, chickens, and two generations of kids. Any of our young grandchildren could take off walking through the woods and Eonan would stay by their side, every step of the way. Precious memories! He is gone, and was our last dog (we are older now), and our only regret was not discovering this breed earlier.

I have a pyreneasn mastiff and I highly recommend. I don't have a farm but I have a large yard and I babysit peoples dogs for extra money. He's never been trained as a lgd but at one year old a pit bull climbed into our fence to attack and he protected all the other dogs and me. He handled business and made the pit bull give up without killing him. He's the sweetest most loving dog and other than that I've never seen him show an ounce of aggression. He loves everyone from teacup size to big dogs like him. He's a pure soul and he just came that way ❤

We lost our Great Pyr last year and I miss her terribly. She was a very special creature - just like the video said, very gentle with people, other dogs, cats but fearlessly protective. She made a perimeter path around our property and was constantly checking it out. When inside, she always faced outward and always laid by a door or a window. Always on a lookout. She was a truly magnificent dog.

All these dogs are amazing but the Anatolian Shepherds are in a league of their own. Powerfully built, super strong, fast as lighting with those hind quarters, teeth like little daggers, deep and resonating bark due to large and deep chest, friendly, social, territorial and tolerant, just don't invade their territory or even pretend to present a danger to anyone they have adopted into their circle of protection.

I don't know exactly you did it on purpose or not, but you were noncompetent enough to forget the best ones - The Caucasian Shepherd, The Central Asian Sheperd!

I like the Great Pyrenees. I just adopted a six month old puppy who has spent her first years of life outside in a field. She's adjusted to being a house dog in a few short days. Calm, friendly and intelligent!

No one calls it Illyrian Shepherd anymore.
Today it is called Sarplaninac. (English: Shar Mountaineer)
