I've just bought the Yamaha. I'm glad I made the right decision!

I agree that the Yamaha sounds better, but the Roland F-20 has a WAY better keyboard. And I'm talking as a professional classical/jazz pianist. The Roland keyboard feels a lot more like that of a real grand piano, even featuring decent double escapement simulation, which no other manufacturer even attempts (and yes, that's the reason why the Roland model is considerably heavier.) The Yamaha keyboard is the usual cheap plastic "weighted" affair every 88-key synthesizer uses. In other words, if you are buying a digital piano for gigging or even home concerts, the Yamaha is probably your best bet. If, on the other hand, you're a classical/jazz musician looking for a keyboard that matches that of your grand piano to practice at night, then the Roland is a better choice. Also consider that you might use the F-20 as a controller to drive professional sample libraries from your laptop, and in that case you'd have the best of both words: a top-notch library like Ivory 2 or Vienna Imperial coupled with a fantastic keyboard that closely resembles that of your grand piano. The Roland is probably also a better choice for a student who can't afford to buy a grand piano but wishes to study on something whose keyboard feels like the real thing.

The sound of the F20 is recorded in full mono. As a result, the low-frequency sound is damaged by the cancellation. The lack of stereo sound from the F20 piano, by comparison, shows the Yamaha's extreme advantage, falsely. The sound of the Roland piano is not inferior in any way. Stylistically it is different.
I know both instruments intimately. I have known the sound of the F20 for two months. The sound patterns recorded with four different key dynamics with Roland's Super Natural sound mapping achieve the variety of a piano sound built from 16 dynamic layers.

you can not compare two pianos recorded in a different way this is a mock test

The Roland F-20 actually uses the same sounds sample as the E-80 workstation keyboard, while Yamaha YDP-142 are using the same as their Clavinova series which, practically, better than F-20 in terms of sound quality. But for the key action, F-20 is a little more responsive and bit heavier to the touch, making it more like a real acoustic piano.

Also hurts that the Yamaha is being recorded in stereo while the Roland is being recorded mono... ????

When both piano have stereo outputs...

Did you have the opportunity to test the Kurzweil M210? Can you compare the two pianos?

It's apples-to-oranges.. I guess the YDP142's match is the F-120 or F-130

Yamaha YDP 142 sounds very richly and authentically just like a real one.

Both excellent sounding instruments - I'd pick the Yamaha by a very small margin.

Roland seems to have better dynamics, also sounds louder (though that could be the recording), and of course has better decay. But it's hard for me to pick a sound I prefer. Don't like the non AP sounds on either one.

I am surprised that there is so much difference between both! The yam sounds better on every instrument.

I'll definitely Yamaha, but because there was no connection stereo Roland ?, maybe because it sounds less than Yamaha

My music knowledge is next to nothing, but from a listener point of view YAMAHA sounded much better.

I think YDP 142 is better than Roland for Piano.

I honestly can't see how anyone thinks Roland is superior. Every demo I hear of Roland dp acoustic piano sounds have a cheap metallic ping and compressed sound. I've blinded  tested this review, still  feeling Yamaha had the clearly superior sounds.

I know which I prefer listening to, the Yamaha hands down. I hate the 'tick' at the beginning of every note from the Roland, sounds horrible.
