In this Android tutorial you will learn:
-XML, the Easy way, using the Graphical Layout
-Accessing Properties Tab (and other tabs) in Eclipse
-Making a Button
-Introduction to the id reference in Java
-New XML functions
-Introduction/Review of how the Manifest calls the Java activity which calls the XML layout
-Create a new XML layout
-HOMEWORK: create 3 different icons and place them in the appropriate folders ( create one icon 150x150px for the high density folder, one 75x75 for medium, and one 35x35 for the low density folder)

This video is the 5 in a web series that I am creating to help you learn Android programming so you can create apps and eventually how to learn to write games for android phones. I want to explain things in a way that everyone can understand, even if you have no experience with Java, XML, C, OpenGL, or as a matter of fact, any other programming language.

If you do have a lot of experience with programming, these first videos will be really slow for you, but my goal is to get everyone sprinting, but for now we have learn to crawl.

I think this is the best tutorial I've seen so far. Including (paid) books and everything.

Hey Ralph, I made these tutorials over a year ago and the sdk has been updated quite a bit, but I'll consider making updated tutorials. Thanks for your comment! Just stick with it and you will learn a ton, especially because you have to experiment for yourself. Best of luck!

Love the tutorials. I coded java back in HS in 1997 when it was 1.1 These tutorials were just what I needed to write a app for fun. Good work. For every one finishing lesson #5 with me and did their home work suggested at the end of the video you should really read Supporting Multiple Screens Android Developers Google it is the first result; this gives good outline of screen sizes and the resolution of images you should shoot for in your drawable folders.

Thanks Travis

The layout in eclipse Juno is different. It takes some searching to find everything. Even the default code is different. For example you had Linearlayout and I had RelativeLayout. It doesn't bother me that much, but for someone new, it can be confusing and even tiring. Other than that I think it's a great tutorial.

Theres a difference between LinearLayout and RelativeLayout, The Linear requires you to set up stuff according to each other (eg. you have to attach a new element to an existing element). Whereas RelativeLayout you can pretty much place stuff whereever you want by either drag&drop or code it.

@vash1053 Depending on what version of the sdk/adt you have... Try switch from LinearLayout to RelativeLayout in the xml code, and then go into the graphic view and placing buttons, textview and whatever else freely. Hope that helps :D
