How Beauty Leads Physics Astray
Sabine Hossenfelder, Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (28 March 2019)
To develop fundamentally new laws of nature, theoretical physicists often rely on arguments from beauty. Simplicity and naturalness in particular have been strongly influential guides in the foundations of physics ever since the development of the standard model of particle physics. In this lecture, Sabine Hossenfelder argues that arguments from beauty have led the field into a dead end and discuss what can be done about it.
Established in 1998, the principal aim of the Science and Society initiative at EMBL is to promote a better and broader understanding of the growing social and cultural relevance of the life sciences. We invite speakers – experts within various disciplines of science and the humanities – on a regular basis to the EMBL to give public lectures on topics of interest.
