Steinberg are currently running a 40% off promotion on various pieces of their legendary software. One such piece is Nuendo 13, their composing and post-production behemoth of a DAW. But as your average Cubase user, is it worth spending the extra £229.20 to make the upgrade? Several months ago, Steinberg generously gave us a licence for Nuendo 13 and now it is my main DAW. There are a plethora of features that Nuendo has, yet Cubase Pro 13 doesn’t. Depending on your role in music production however, these may never really become useful. The aim of this video is to show you the user experience and transition from Cubase to Nuendo whilst highlighting the most important features as a composer.

Join Pete Checkley as he gives his perspective as a working composer.

Our sincere thanks to Steinberg for providing a copy of Nuendo 13 so we can make this video.

Cubase Pro 13 user here, I do about 70% composing and music production but the remaining 30% I do a bit of sound design, dialogue/sample editing, and mixing for post. Saw the crossgrade offer and was curious to know if it's worth it as a composer - and then you read my mind and posted this video lol.

I am giving the trial a go and it's great so far! Love some of the audio editing enhancements. Also I copied my entire preferences folder from Cubase over to Nuendo (on a mac) so the transition was even more immediate, the colors and transport stuff you described as having to reset to your liking came along no problem. Also I find the red highlight to be intriguing but I think I prefer the darker cubase highlight, in particular for the issue you pointed out with red events! I have red and orange color coding in my templates and feel like the red outline is really hard to see. Curious if that can be changed.

But all in all think I'm gonna take the jump. There's some cool and handy sound design tools in here that you can't get with Cubase. Oh and two other rad features I discovered which can also be helpful for composing - multiple video tracks (handy with commercials and alternate version edits!) + video cut detection which is super helpful for creating marker hitpoints for both composing and audio editing.

Great video, thanks for making. Cheers!

Most of the things shown in this video are in Cubase. I was hoping it would go deeper into the differences.

After 30 years using Cubase, I have come to the point that having both Cubase and Nuendo is extremely redundant. And probably by next year I will convert my Cubase License to a second Nuendo system. Which is still redundant since I can run Nuendo on 3 computers at once. BUT!!! Cubase always gets all the good stuff first, then NUENDO gets them... (VST instruments)
Its a dilemma. I'm using Nuendo since 2001 and Cubase since 1994.

Great production, but it took 14 minutes in to mention the first difference between the two products. I'm not convinced a change from C13 is necessary. Unless the performance is markedly improved. Guess I'll have to try.
