I lived in Southern California for 35 years and am experienced with earthquakes. The advice given here is very good advice and should be heeded. Let me add a few things. First, when you feel an earthquake, don't panic. Panic will cause you to forget these lessons and do the wrong things, such as running outside. Second, be aware that after the shaking stops, after shocks may follow. The aftershocks are usually less than the main shock but may still be strong. Lastly, being in a car is a good thing. The shock absorbers will soften the shaking and the roof will probably protect you from falling debris. So, pull over, stop, and stay in the car.
