The song, written by producer Thom Bell and singer-songwriter Linda Creed, was about Bell's son, who was being teased by his classmates for being overweight. Intended to improve his son's self-image, the song eventually evolved from being about "The Fat Man" to "The Rubberband Man".

The last major hit by the Spinners to feature Philippé Wynne on lead vocals, "The Rubberband Man" spent three weeks at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and topped the U.S. R&B chart at the end of 1976. It was also a top-20 hit in the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 16 in October 1976.

The song returned to the Billboard charts in 2018 because of its use in the Guardians of the Galaxy's introductory appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.

The song was included in the Detroit Free Press's "Detroit's 100 Greatest Songs" list, ranking 70th.

This song never gets old. It’s 48 years old and still jamming. The 70s was a time for all of the great bands. Almost all of them are in the rock and roll hall of fame. Classic!

Amazing that the Audience of the Marvel Movies, the younger generation, especially really identifies with this music from 1976 amazing that Stan Lee and everyone put all of this together and in 2018-2019 everyone associates this song with the Guardians of the Galaxy I just love it. thanks again Joel, for this. A musical legacy that we need right keep into the future.

I heard this song all by myself as I was waiting for my ride at the end of my shift as as a bartender at 4AM. It was like even though I'd heard the song many times. It was this time that I really heard what a great song this is and the fierce rythyms that propel this song.
And now I read here as to what inspired the song. It now has a personal meaning to me. Because I was teased quite a bit as a kid. And this song does what any creator of song would strive and hope for. For the song to be an inspiration for a downtrodden soul to be fortified in their efforts to be themselves. And to carry on to doing what they feel is right.
Who knew? Carry on SPINNING!

Back in 2018 when this movie was fresh in theaters, and when a 70s like jam started playing I automatically knew who we were getting introduced too
