Your favorite answer…”It depends.”
Sorry! Kids have larger lymph nodes than adults, the location of said lymph nodes (LNs) matters, and it’s all about clinical context!
Location, location, location.
In the neck, up to 10 mm is normal.
For the armpit, it’s up to 15 mm.
And the mac daddy inguinals?! Normal can be as large as 2 cm.
“Reactive” LNs can temporarily enlarge in response to infection, inflammation, or injury, and is often due to an increase in immune activity. These nodes usually wax and wane, and are often considered “normal” when considering the clinical *context*. 🤌
Context is everything, y’all. Swollen LNs can feel really scary, but don’t doom spiral until you’ve looked at the context.
The self-inflicted mind melt is real! Why is our brain like this? Our mind always goes to the worst possible outcome…😱
More context? You got it.
Pathological enlargement can be “normal” for autoimmune conditions but “abnormal” when there’s a malignant cause like lymphoma, metastases, or leukemia.
There’s a wide range of sizes that our LN be, and it can feel confusing to know for sure what’s “normal” for you, and what’s not…
It depends. The key takeaways here in THIS post are: here’s what’s possible, support your body by understanding it a little bit better than you did 90 seconds ago, and go to a doctor if you have a golf ball size or larger lymph node.
Share your enlarged lymph node experience below! I learn from you guys all the time. Teach me what’s possible, and together we can help more people. ❤️🩹
